The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat Qu's body. They also sat on long, narrow paddle boats called dragon boats, and tried to scare the fish away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking carved dragon head on the boat's prow.
In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "Poets' Day," due to Qu Yuan's status as China's first poet of personal renown.

“节分端午自谁言，万古传闻为屈原。堪笑楚江空渺渺，不能洗得直臣冤。”端午节不久就到了，想必大家对去年过端午节的情形仍记忆犹新吧！现在我就介绍一下我家乡的端午节吧！农历五月初五，是家乡最有特色的日子――――端午节。虽然端午节是中国人民中一个十分盛行的隆重节日，无论在中国南方还是北方，都有过端午节的习俗。但我感觉，北方的更有意思，气氛更浓郁，更能表现端午节特色。
端午节是为纪念伟大诗人屈原所定的节日。每到端午节这一天，我们家家户户都会包一种"棕子：用新鲜的粽叶来缚棕，里面放有配料，分有大枣、蜜枣和葡萄干，包好的粽子放在一个锅里煮，等粽子熟了以后，会闻到淡淡的竹叶香，清香四溢，弥漫整个厨房……家里包了一大把粽子，总要送亲戚朋友一大包，一大包的。其他人也用自家包的粽子作为谢意送给我们。因此，在端午哪天，我家总有从姨妈，外婆家带来的吃不完的粽子。端午习俗可谓多种多样。插茱萸。在端午的前几天，人们就弄一枝茱萸（或一柳条）插于门楣之上，据说可以驱妖避邪。戴香包。大人们用布缝制成小布包，并将艾、苍术、板蓝根等草药包于其中，让孩子或戴于项下，或系于腰间，可增强免疫力。我最爱吃粽子。
每逢端午节，我总要吃个够，直到再也吃不下为止。妈妈做的粽子十分可口。轻轻将棕叶撕破，便露出了又白又嫩的糯米糕，忍不住吃一口，甜汁溢入口中，那感觉简直妙不可言。
